Endowed by faculty, organizations, individuals and families, Bishop Canevin is able to offer current and incoming students a number of scholarships based on academics, service, leadership and/or need. The following describe current scholarship opportunities and the specific requirements for each.

Incoming Students

I. The Principal’s Scholarship

Scholarships from $300 - $1000 awarded on the basis of financial need and academic promise.  Requires recommendation from grade school principal, letter of application and PSAS application. Renewable annually.

II. Student Council Scholarship

Awarded yearly to 3-5 incoming freshmen. The recipients will be selected from among those eighth-grade students who have been nominated by the participating grade school principals and who have demonstrated a marked degree of involvement in their school and parish throughout the grade school years. Letter of application required.

III. Fr. Leo Henry Scholarship

Eighth grade students who take the Placement Exam at Bishop Canevin may qualify for a scholarship. Awarded in the name of Fr. Leo Henry, Bishop Canevin’s first Headmaster, and based upon the top scores achieved on the Placement Exam, one boy and one girl will each receive a $2500 scholarship. Non-renewable.

IV. Jack & Anna Mae McGinley Scholarship

Established by the McGinley Family in memory of their late parents & grandparents, Jack & Anna Mae, this scholarship is a $1,000 award to one incoming freshman with one or more sibling(s) currently in attendance at Bishop Canevin. Applicants must demonstrate financial need, have a ‘B’ average, demonstrate leadership and take the Placement Exam at Bishop Canevin. PSAS application and letter of request required. Non-renewable.

VI. Cygrymus Scholarship

Established in honor of Mr. Ronald Cygrymus, long-time faculty member and administrator, a $500 grant will be awarded to one incoming freshman. Candidate must have achieved at least a ‘B’ average in grade school years and be actively involved in his/her school.

VII. Mitch Scholarship

Established by a number of his former students in the memory of beloved Math teacher, Mr. John Mieczkowski, the award is given to one incoming freshman from St. Elizabeth Seton, St. Philip or Elizabeth Ann Seton grade schools; must be interested in Math and submit an essay on the subject “Why I Love Math.”

VIII. Doris Hesselberg Endowed Scholarship

Named in memory of Mrs. Doris Hesselberg, former Bishop Canevin Foreign Language teacher, this scholarship will be awarded to an incoming student who has at least a “B” average and has an interest and excels in a foreign language. Amount varies.

 

Upperclassmen Scholarships

I. The Principal’s Scholarship

Scholarships from $300 - $1000 awarded on the basis of financial need and academic promise.  Requires recommendation from principal, letter of application and PSAS application. Renewable annually.

II. Ryan Graham Memorial Scholarship

Established by Robert and Larraine Graham in memory of their son, Ryan, and awarded yearly to a currently enrolled sophomore or junior with a minimum 3.0 cumulative QPA at the end of the first quarter. The student must be actively involved in service to Bishop Canevin as well as the community. The award ranges from $200-$300.

III. Hartung Scholarship

Established by her family in memory of Mrs. Catherine Riley Hartung, long-time Pittsburgh educator. Awarded to one junior or senior who has shown marked improvement in their years at Bishop Canevin. Award varies.

IV. Sr. Judith Worden Scholarship

Named in honor of Sr. Judith Worden, RSM this $500 scholarship is awarded annually to one student who has an interest and excels in the Fine or Performing Arts.

V. Mary S. Del Vecchio and Mary E. Kulback Memorial Scholarship

Established by Mr. & Mrs. Russell Del Vecchio in memory of their parents, a $1000 scholarship will be awarded to an incoming freshman. The scholarship will be dispensed in two equal installments, the first at the beginning of the school year and the second at the start of the second semester upon verification of a 3.0 QPA and an exemplary discipline record.  Letter of application required. Non-renewable.

 

Special Scholarships

I. The Faculty Scholarship

Endowed by Bishop Canevin faculty members, the scholarship is specifically targeted for those with a third child in the school, although consideration may also be given to those with a second child and special needs. In addition to financial need, consideration will be given to academic progress, discipline and attendance records, as well as school involvement. Students/families cannot apply. Awards are determined by faculty committee.

II. Junior Achievement’s Bishop Donald W. Wuerl Scholarship

Ten $3000 scholarships will be awarded to 8th grade students throughout the diocese from Junior Achievement in the name of Bishop Wuerl. Applicants may use the scholarship at any of the Catholic high schools in the diocese. Contact JA at 724-772-5900 for eligibility guidelines. Applications are available at Bishop Canevin.

 

Private School Aid Service (PSAS) applications are normally available the first week of January. Phone requests will be taken at that time by Mrs. Kathy Albert in the Bishop Canevin Business Office at 412-922-7400 x17.

The deadline for submission of the PSAS form is March 15 prior to the upcoming school year.

All applications, letters of recommendation, essays, etc. for Scholarship considerations are due to Bishop Canevin High School by April 15.
