Endowed by faculty, organizations, individuals and families, Bishop Canevin is able to offer current and incoming students a number of scholarships based on academics, service, leadership and/or need. The following describe current scholarship opportunities and the specific requirements for each.
Private School Aid Service (PSAS) applications are normally available the first week of January. Phone requests will be taken at that time by Mrs. Judi Palastro in the Bishop Canevin Business Office at 412-922-7400 x17. PSAS forms are available on our website. The deadline for submission of the PSAS form for financial aid and any Scholarship is March 15 prior to the upcoming school year.
INCOMING STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS
I. The Principal's Scholarship
Scholarships from $300 - $700 awarded on the basis of financial need and academic promise. Requires a BCHS Scholarship Application, brief letter of recommendation from the grade school principal and the PSAS application. Renewable annually.
II. Student Council Scholarship
$1000 awarded yearly to 5-7 incoming freshmen. The recipients will be selected from among those eighth-grade students who have been recommended by their grade school principals as demonstrating a marked degree of involvement in their school and parish throughout the grade school years. Requires a BCHS Scholarship Application and a letter of recommendation from the grade school principal.
III. Fr. Leo Henry Scholarship
Eighth grade students who take the BCHS Placement Exam may qualify for a scholarship. Awarded in the name of Fr. Leo Henry, Bishop Canevin's first Headmaster, and based upon the top scores achieved on the Placement Exam, one boy and one girl will each receive a $2500 scholarship.
IV. Jack & Anna Mae McGinley Scholarship
Established by the McGinley Family in memory of their late parents & grandparents, Jack & Anna Mae, this scholarship is a $1,000 award to one incoming freshman with one or more sibling(s) currently in attendance at Bishop Canevin. Applicants must demonstrate financial need, have a 'B' average, demonstrate leadership and take the Placement Exam at Bishop Canevin. BCHS Scholarship Application and PSAS application required. (BC Placement test on file)
V. Cygrymus Scholarship
Established in honor of Mr. Ronald Cygrymus, long-time faculty member and administrator, a $500 grant will be awarded to one incoming freshman. Candidate must have achieved at least a 'B' average in grade school years and be actively involved in his/her school. BCHS Scholarship Application required.
VI. Mary S. Del Vecchio and Mary E. Kulback Memorial Scholarship
Established by Mr. Russell Del Vecchio and the late Kathleen Kulback Del Vecchio in memory of their parents, a $1000 scholarship will be awarded to a freshman at the end of the first semester. The scholarship will be awarded at the start of the second semester upon verification of a 3.0 QPA, an exemplary discipline record and family need. VII. Mitch Scholarship
Established by a number of his former students in the memory of beloved Math teacher, Mr. John Mieczkowski, the award is given to one incoming freshman from St. Philip School, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Guardian Angels or Holy Innocents parishes; must be interested in Math and submit an essay on the subject "Why I Love Math." (100 words or less) BCHS Scholarship Application required.
VIII. Doris Hesselberg Endowed Scholarship
Named in memory of Mrs. Doris Hesselberg, former Bishop Canevin Foreign Language teacher, this scholarship will be awarded to an incoming student who has at least a "B" average and has an interest and excels in a foreign language. Amount varies; not less than $500. BCHS Scholarship Application required.
IX. Richard R. Grandey Scholarship
Established by Sr. Brigid Marie Grandey, S.C. former Assistant Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Diocese of Pittsburgh and her family in memory of her brother, the late Richard R. Grandey. $1500 awarded to one incoming freshman at each of the Catholic high schools. The awardee must exhibit above-average academic performance, a positive attitude about school, kindness to others, and a community mindedness through participation in outside projects/programs. X. Joseph and Mary Jane Zyra Scholarship
Named in honor of their parents, this scholarship was established in 2007 by sons Joseph '70 and Gary '71. This $1000 scholarship is awarded to one incoming freshman from either Ss. Simon and Jude or Our Lady of Grace Elementary School or parishes who shows promise in the areas of student leadership and academics. Requires one brief letter of recommendation from a pastor, principal, teacher, youth minister or similar adult leader, the BCHS Scholarship Application and PSAS Application.
XI. Dean Petrone Scholarship Established by his family in memory of BC graduate Dean Petrone, this $500 scholarship is awarded to one incoming freshman who is a graduate of St. Philip Elementary School. BCHS Scholarship Application and PSAS application required.
XII. Grandparents' Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Mrs. Marianne Reinhart and family in memory of their mother, Margaret Halligan Snock. The $500 scholarship is awarded to one incoming Catholic freshman who has exhibited outstanding leadership above and beyond normal participation in organized events in their school, parish, or community. At least one letter of recommendation must accompany this application verifying the student's role(s) in creating, organizing and leading others in a project or effort that has made a difference. Letter of recommendation and BCHC Scholarship Application required.
XIII. Alumni Legacy Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2011-12 by alumni serving on the Bishop Canevin Board of Directors to assist students with financial need. The award will range from $500-$1000 for an incoming freshman. PSAS application and the BCHS Scholarship Application required.
XIV. The James P. Presken Memorial Scholarship
The James P. Presken Memorial Scholarship was created in 2010 by the Rakaczky Family to honor and memorialize Mr. Presken’s legacy at Bishop Canevin as a coach, parent and friend. The $500 scholarship is awarded to one incoming freshman actively involved in school and with demonstrated financial need. PSAS application and the BCHS Scholarship Application required.
XV. The Class of 1988 Scholarship
This scholarship was founded by Chris Brokaw ’88, Lina Insana ’88, Jeff Gnipp ’88, Bob Williams ’88 and an anonymous donor. Based on financial need, it assists an incoming freshman by providing him/her with a $500 annual scholarship for four years. PSAS application and the BCHS Scholarship Application required.
XVI. Bishop Canevin Junior Achievement Scholarship
This award was presented by Junior Achievement of Western PA to BCHS to recognize the dedication and exemplary service of our students who teach JA economic lessons to students in our partner elementary schools. The BC students have chosen to give back this award by creating a $250 scholarship for an incoming freshman who has participated in JA during their eighth grade year at one of the following schools: Our Lady of Grace, St. Philip, Holy Trinity, St. Margaret, or St. Patrick School. The applicant must write an essay (approx. 100 words) explaining why they would like to become a Bishop Canevin High School JA teacher. BCHS Scholarship Application required.
XVII. Junior Achievement's Cardinal Donald W. Wuerl Scholarship
Scholarships will be awarded to 8th grade students whose school participates in the Junior Achievement program throughout the Diocese of Pittsburgh from Junior Achievement of Southwestern PA in the name of Cardinal Wuerl. Contact JA at 412-208-4747 for eligibility guidelines.

II. Hartung Scholarship
Established by her family in memory of Mr. Raymond Hartung, Sr. and Mrs. Catherine Riley Hartung, long-time Pittsburgh educator. Awarded during Catholic Schools Week each year to one junior or senior who has shown marked improvement in their years at Bishop Canevin. Award varies.
III. Sr. Judith Worden Scholarship
Named in honor of Sr. Judith Worden, RSM this $500 scholarship is awarded annually to one student who has an interest and excels in the Fine or Performing Arts.
IV. Regis McGrath Scholarship
Created by Jason Shapiro '02 to preserve the memory of the late Regis McGrath '03, this scholarship is awarded annually to a senior with a minimum 3.0 GPA who actively participates in extracurricular school activities. Award varies.
I. The Faculty Scholarship
Endowed by Bishop Canevin faculty members, the scholarship is specifically targeted for those with a third child in the school, although consideration may also be given to those with a second child and special needs. In addition to financial need, consideration will be given to academic progress, discipline and attendance records, as well as school involvement. Students/families cannot apply. Awards are determined by faculty committee.
